Four women talk living in the West, saving the world and the power of community.
1. Katerina Gaita - co-founder of Permaculture Out West and climate communicator.
Katerina has been an active member of the inner West community for over 8 years. She has been involved in many local groups and campaigns, most notably co-founding Permaculture Out West. As well as her local community and her family, Katerina’s other passion is helping mainstream Australia understand and act on climate change, recently training with Al Gore.
2. Gemma Jones: Artist and craft organiser.
Gemma Jones has lived in Yarraville for over a decade. Amongst many projects, she was a feature subject in the documentary "Making it Handmade", co-edited a book on the artist Vali Myers and raised over $10,000 for the Black Saturday Appeal with a giant art raffle in 2009.
3. Ashley Carr: Community loving writer and mum/foster mum.
Ashley Carr has been a proud resident of Footscray for seven years. She spends her time juggling motherhood, creative projects, study and work. She is currently writing a book documenting stories of people who have been dissatisfied with the system and who are responding personally and creatively.
MC Greens MP Colleen Hartland
Colleen has lived in Footscray for 30 years and has been a strong community advocate. At the age of 40 Colleen obtained her Community Development qualification at Victoria University TAFE after many years in low paid, low skill jobs. In fact, Colleen first entered parliament as a cook in the kitchen. Now a MP, she continues to be a strong community advocate both in Parliament and in the community.
